The works carried out can be divided in three main lines : design and management of experimental studies on primary production processes, macrophyte spatial distribution study and development of macrophyte and seagrass numerical models. In situ and in vitro experiments have been performed with the aim of studying the processes and the parameters involved in the photosynthesis-respiration system, as well as to establish the main biotic (self-shading effect, physiology of the photosynthesis, carbon, nitrogen and chlorophyll tissu contents) and abiotic (temperature, light and nutrients) factors controlling macrobenthic primary production. A seagrass ecosystem model based on nitrogen and oxygen fluxes has been developped. Model calibration and validation have...

Devreker, David; Lefebvre, Alain.
This report is the second assessment of French marine water eutrophication status (descriptor 5) done in the framework of the MSFD. The goal of this report is to determine if French marine water reach the Good Ecological State as defined by the MSFD. It stands next to the initial evaluation made in 2012, from which it is an update. It introduces the second cycle of the Marine Environment Action Program. It shows that French marine waters, behind the 12 nm line, reach the GES as defined by the MSFD. Problems link to eutrophication occurs in marine waters above the 12 nm, where 6.5% of the area do not reach the GES.

Evaluation of On-Farm Quick Tests on Slurries from Southern Chile Dairy Farms Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Salazar S,Francisco; Rosas U,Marianela.
Currently in Chile, there is a lack of tools to determine the real-time nutrient contribution of slurries. This study aims to evaluate three quick tests for their accuracy in estimating the total contents of N (TN), P (TP), K (TK), and ammonium-N (N-NH4+) in dairy slurries. The quick tests included the Agros Nova Meter, Quantofix N Volumeter, and a hydrometer. While the Agros and Quantofix meters directly measure the ammonium-N content; the hydrometer indirectly estimates the total content of N, P, and K based on linear relationships with the slurry DM. Samples (73) were collected from dairy farms along Southern Chile (39° to 44° S and 71 to 73° W). Analyses were carried out on laboratory conditions using conventional techniques as well as using each of...

Expanding biogas on UK dairy farms: a question of scale AgEcon
Butler, Allan J.; Hobbs, Phil; Winter, Michael.
Expanding Anaerobic Digestion (AD) in the UK will not only depend upon finding appropriate economic structures to support on‐farm developments but also an appreciation of environmental issues such as less Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions; reduced use of artificial fertilisers; and better management of farm wastes. At the core of this paper is the Anaerobic Digestion Analytical Model (ADAM) that examines the economic and environmental impacts of integrating AD into UK farming systems. However, the average dairy farm in the UK is not of sufficient size to enable profitable biogas production. Indeed, farm size, as represented by FBS/FAS data used in ADAM, needs to be scaled by three to four times for a biogas enterprise to break‐even. To boost profitability,...

EXTRACTION CAPACITY OF GRASSES GROWN IN CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEMS USING DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENTS AND SUBSTRATES REA
Saraiva,Claudety B.; Matos,Antonio T.; Matos,Mateus P. de.
ABSTRACT Constructed wetland systems have been used to treat different wastewater; among their essential components are the cultivated plant species and type of substrate used to fill them. The choice of plant species and type of substrate are important for the good system performance in wastewater treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the extraction capacity of Napier and Tifton 85 grasses when cultivated at different positions in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs) filled with different substrates in wastewater treatment from a bulk milk-cooling tank (MTWW). The experimental unit consisted of four HSSF-CWs, in which an average surface organic loading rate of 318 kg ha−1 d−1 of BOD5,20 was imposed and a hydraulic holding time of...

Fast Food, Addiction, and Market Power AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Patterson, Paul M.; Hamilton, Stephen F..
Many attribute the rise in obesity since the early 1980's to the overconsumption of fast food. A dynamic model of a different-product industry equilibrium shows that a firm with market power will price below marginal cost in a steady-state equilibrium. A spatial hedonic pricing model is used to test whether fast food firms set prices in order to exploit their inherent addictiveness. The results show that firms price products dense in addictive nutrients below marginal cost, but price products high in nonaddictive nutrients higher than would be the case in perfect competition.

FAT TAX: A POLITICAL MEASURE TO REDUCE OVERWEIGHT? THE CASE OF GERMANY AgEcon
Thiele, Silke.
Using an Almost Ideal Demand System food price elasticities for German households are calculated. These elasticities serve as a basis to simulate the effect of the substitutions of different food types due to a tax on saturated fat. The change of food structure causes effects on the energy and nutrient supply of individuals as well as, on consumer welfare. These effects are analyzed for different German household groups. It is found that decreases in energy and fat intake are small but potentially effective especially for low-income households. However, due to the collateral decrease of nutrients which Germans have deficient supply of, the total health effects of a fat tax remain unclear. Furthermore the results show that low-income groups would bear...

Fonctionnement des marais maritimes atlantiques: échanges d'énergie et effets des flux aquacoles diffus ArchiMer
Bel Hassen, Malika.
French estuaries, from the Atlantic coast to the English channel, have been characterized by a poor phytoplankton biomass. The turbidity has always been considered as the limiting factor for phytoplankton. Estuarine ecosystems are situated at the boundary between the land and the sea. Consequently, they are subject to an enrichment by nutrient loadings from upland ecosystems. Although it has been demonstrated that a part of the nutrient loadings support an important benthic production. The part, which escapes to the estuarine benthic and planktonic food web and is exported to adjacent estuarine ecosystems, still remains undetermined. Quantifying the nu trient and particulate matter exchange between a macrotidal Bay, the Fier d'Ars, and the adjacent ocean...

Food quantity and quality of cassava affected by leguminous residues and inorganic nitrogen application in a soil of low natural fertility of the humid tropics Bragantia
Moura-Silva,Aline Gomes; Aguiar,Alana das Chagas Ferreira; Jorge,Neuza; Agostini-Costa,Tânia da Silveira; Moura,Emanoel Gomes.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the quality and quantity of biofortified cassava root in a humid tropical environment can be modified with the application of a combination of low- and high-quality residues of leguminous tree species. The experiment was designed as a 6 × 2 factorial (a combination of 4 legume species versus 2 levels of nitrogen) with 4 replications in a randomized block design and the following treatments: Gliricidia + Acacia, Gliricidia + Leucaena, Gliricidia + Clitoria, Leucaena + Acacia, Leucaena + Clitoria, and a control without legumes. We analyzed the shoot weight, number of roots/plant, root weight, root production, proximate composition, as well as the mineral, carotenoid, and pro-vitamin A contents....

Germination of fungal pathogen spores in calcium, copper, manganese and zinc chelated with aminoacids Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Lorenzetti,Eloisa; Tartaro,Juliano; Alves Neto,Alfredo José; Stangarlin,José Renato; Portz,Roberto Luis; Kuhn,Odair José.
ABSTRACT Due to the environmental impact generated using fungicides, new alternatives for disease control have been arising, such as the use of nutrients that may act on the development of certain pathogens or decrease the host susceptibility to diseases. The objective of this work was to verify if chelates of calcium, copper, manganese and zinc inhibit the germination of Puccinia sorghi, Cercospora sp. and Exserohilum turcicum spores. Two experiments were carried out: the first with agar-water culture medium, where the treatments and spores were placed at the same moment and the second using corn leaves as substrate, where treatments were administered zero, one, two, three, four and five hours after the spores are sprayed. Calcium, copper, manganese and...
